Rick will educate us as rental property owners, property managers and real estate investors of the advocacy efforts we have taken on at the Federal, State and Local levels of government. • and So Much More...

Speaker: Rick Van Der Leest

Apartment Association of Northeast Wisconsin | President

Rick was introduced to real estate at a very young age as his father was a custom home builder. At times, like any good business will do, as a home builder his dad would fill in with building duplexes, as well as remodeling and rehabbing in between doing what he genuinely loved, which was that niche in the market that demanded a high quality/custom built home.

This experience introduced Rick to a wide variety of traditional skills that a custom home builder must have. Beyond these traditional skills, Rick attributes his work ethic, ability to thoroughly analyze an issue at the root cause level, come up with solutions that engage a broad and deep group of stakeholders, and always work with an excellence in customer service mindset, as also being rooted in these young life’s experiences.

In a prior life, Rick and his family were fortunate enough to have lived in countries outside the US, as well as several states outside the state of Wisconsin. This has allowed him to own real estate outside the Badger State and gain exposure to a variety of local, state, and federal government rental housing industry related initiatives and policies.

Holding industrial, commercial, and residential asset classes for decades now, has given Rick the opportunity to network with many “mentors” over the decades, which is in part why he became involved in some of the Wisconsin rental industry/housing associations prior to the pandemic.

These rental housing association experiences allowed Rick to recognize “opportunities” to do things differently relative to government affairs and advocacy, including a grass roots legislative engagement strategy, similar to what he has been a part of in other states and countries in the past.

His passion for sharing with others how to advance a more efficient and effective way to advocate for the industry, many earn their living from, is best illustrated when Rick walks the audience through what has become an extremely popular presentation that he has been asked to give across the State on several different occasions.

WiscoREIA’s Green Bay Meeting Always Meets on the 1st Tuesday of the Month from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm!

Hosts: Joe Gracyalny & Mike Martell

Joe is a real estate investor in the Green Bay/Fox Valley area. He has partnerships with other investors, as well as his own projects and views investing as a team activity. He specializes in self-storage and multifamily projects.

Joe has a passion for education and helping newer investors. He was a teacher and coach in Dubuque, IA before moving back to his Wisconsin roots. As a teacher, he added a few rentals in the Green Bay area and recognized the opportunity in real estate. He took the leap and hasn’t looked back. WiscoREIA provides the opportunity for him to be able to scratch that educator itch, as well as learn from the many people in the room.

Joe got his first project under contract in 2018 and has been growing ever since. Known primarily in the area as "Duplex Joe," he has ventured on from mostly multifamily projects, into the self-storage space and buys deals across the United States.

If you are new and want to get into rental property, Joe published many of the tools he used in small multifamily for investors for free. Go to duplexuniversity.com where you can find tools, templates, a weekly newsletter, all 100% free to investors. Find Joe on: Instagram @ duplex_joe - Twitter @ realduplexjoe or at WiscoREIA Green Bay on the first Tuesday of every month!

Originally from Two Rivers, Mike and his wife Kathryn (from Brillion) have been married for over 30 years. They have three grown children all living in the upper Midwest. After 25 + years in the kitchen and bath industry working in sales and sales management for a couple of large companies, Mike retired to Door County with Kathryn in June of 2018.

Mike and Kathryn’s interest in real estate began in 1986 with their first duplex, an upper/lower in Wauwatosa, purchased on a land contract. Over the years they moved all over the Midwest chasing the corporate dream but always looking, buying, and updating properties, focused on kitchen and bath remodels. They purchased flips, buy and holds, tried their hand at land development, historic renovations and buying bank owned properties. Today they are focused on vacation rentals and private money lending.
